Gideon sat at the mouth of the tunnel and watched the snow. The flakes were larger than the ones he'd seen the first time he'd come outside. Most were stopped by the boughs of the trees that crowded overhead, yet enough drifted to the ground to cover the tracks he'd made. In another few minutes, there would be no trace that anyone had come this way.

He held out his hand, catching a few snowflakes on his palm. They melted instantly, yet he couldn't prevent the shiver that shook his frame. His body temperature was elevated. His pulse was racing. Beads of sweat moistened his temples and his forehead. His vision alternated between excruciatingly clear and flashes of blurred white.
